Healthy Foods for Your Mouth

Our oral health, just like our general health, starts with what we put inside our bodies! There are many delicious foods that will help keep your smile shining bright. Here are a few to incorporate into a mouth-healthy diet.

Goat Cheese: All cheese contains calcium, and cheese made from cow’s milk is definitely great for your teeth. Cheese made with goat’s milk, however, has more protein and calcium per serving–yet, goat cheese has fewer calories and less fat than cow’s milk cheese! Give goat’s milk a try. Your teeth (and your taste buds!) will thank you. A delicious source of health and smiles!

Dark Leafy Greens: Dark leafy greens such as kale and spinach provide lots of calcium, which strengthens teeth. Try them in a salad with fresh berries, grilled chicken or tofu, feta cheese for protein and calcium, and some nuts for a nice protein-filled crunch. All of these add up to a mouth-healthy, scrumptious lunch!

Water: Water is a necessity of life. As you settle back into the fall routine, remember to pack a water bottle! Try infusing plain water with fruits, vegetables, and herbs for extra nutrition and flavor. Try watermelon and mint, for example, or blueberry-cucumber! Try to avoid lots of citrus, as the prolonged acid exposure can be bad for your teeth.

Fruit: Fruit can be a fantastic addition to your summer diet! Fruit has fiber, which helps balance out the sugars it contains. Crunchy fruit, such as apples or pears, can be extra-beneficial, as they scrape the food particles away from your teeth. They also have a high water content to flush out the debris from inside your mouth. If you choose acidic fruit, pair it with a plain glass of water to gently wash acids away from teeth.

Remember to brush your teeth 30 minutes after eating to help maintain a sparkling smile. For these and other mouth-healthy diet tips, contact our team at Jacob Shrayman, DDS. And don’t forget to schedule your seasonal check-up in Verona, New Jersey by calling (973) 791-4104!
