Toothpaste Shopping Tips

An effective oral hygiene routine has many facets that deserve strong consideration. This should be followed immediately by flossing between your teeth and along the gum line. Toothpaste, improves the effectiveness of the act of brushing. There are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for a particular brand of toothpaste.

Before considering a particular brand of toothpaste you should look to make sure it has earned the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance. This seal represents that it has been researched and tested for safety and effectiveness.

Toothpaste with mild abrasives will help to remove food particles and polish minor surface stains. Many brands have added fluoride to help strengthen enamel and prevent tooth decay.

You will want to look for a nonabrasive toothpaste, if you wear dentures, have a partial or to maintain a mouthpiece such as a custom mouth guard, night guard or snore guard. Abrasive toothpaste can often scuff or dull these mouthpieces.

If you have sensitive teeth, you might want to select a toothpaste that includes potassium nitrate or strontium chloride. Choosing a brand that also has added fluoride will help strengthen tooth enamel and can help reduce sensitivity issues over time.

If you have been struggling with chronic gum disease and you have inflamed gums, you might want to look for a brand with stannous fluoride added.

Many people mitigate minor surface stains by using a whitening toothpaste. However, the concentration of hydrogen peroxide will not strong enough to remove moderate and deep stains on teeth.
